What are Caper Berries?

Caper berries or the caperberry fruit are the mature fruit of the caper bush. The caper bush flower buds are called caper buds. These buds are picked at the end of harvest and pickled.

These pickled caper buds are referred to as capers. However, if the caper bud is not picked in time and let to mature, it produces a fruit called caperberry or caper berries. So, caper berries are the ripened fruits from a caper bud. Caper berries are also pickled and served in assorted culinary preparations. Their use is widespread in Italy and other mediterranean countries.

Caper berries have a unique taste and are consumed by people in Italy, Cyprus, Malta, Spain etc.

The pickled caperberry fruit is often served on Mediterranean and Middle East platters as a small specialty dish. This dish complements lunch and dinner and is accompanied by drinks.
